Go Ahead in the Rain

Garage painted with a mural of three people huddled under umbrellas as it rains. Text included small.

Location: Laneway off Pelham Avenue
Date photo taken: 7 December 2022

A perfect mural for our showery April but it's also a call out to 90s hip hop band A Tribe Called Quest. Go Ahead in the Rain was a track on their first album and it's also the name of an award winning book about the group.

Dumpster Fire

Mural on a brick wall. Cartoonish raccoons cavorting around a dumpster fire while a large white mouse or rat looks on

Location: 48 Pelham Avenue
Date photo taken: 7 December 2022

More awesome raccoon antics courtesy of Emily May Rose, paired with the work of Erika James. The wall was done in 2021 as part of a Laneway Jam organized by KJ Bit Collective and supported by the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council.

Mayan mural

Portion of an urban mural depicting a Mayan figure

Location: Symington Avenue, north of Dupont
Date photo taken: 17 November 2022

This Mayan figure stands facing north, part of a larger mural spanning the west side of the rail underpass on Symington Avenue. Between tagging and flaking, this mural, created around 2009, has seen better days, but this figure, and Isis on the south end, remain relatively unscathed.

Purple cat

colourful mural of a cat painted on a brick wall

Location: Laneway near Davenport and Uxbridge
Date photo taken: 7 December 2022

For today, a splash of colour. This kitty is part of a larger wall featuring the work of three different artists. This is by Jieun (June) Kim and while this picture doesn't do the colours justice, it gives you an idea of her glorious, trippy style.

Enjoying a good read

A Little Free Library built to look like a rustic home. Taken on an angle to show the "window" on the side which includes a little painting of a man sitting, reading

Location: Osler Street north of Dupont
Date photo taken: 7 December 2022

I have a fascination with little box libraries. I think they're a brilliant idea and I love that they exist. They encompass so many things I value. Books of course, but also re-use, neighbourliness and creativity. I love that the owner of this rustic-looking library thought to include windows, which frame images of people enjoying a good book. If you get up close enough, you can even read over their shoulder.

To find your closest library, you can check out the map on the Little Free Library website. Keep in mind that it only lists boxes which have officially registered with them, which costs money, so if you don't see one close by, don't despair. Get out and take a look - there may be an awesome unlisted box in a neighbour's yard near you.
